One of the greatest temptations in life is to believe that other people's stupidity exceeds your own. At best it's just more obvious. I read an article about a school in Pakistan that used pictures of virgins and Paradise to allegedly inspire its students to become suicide bombers (you may see some of those inspirational paintings in my March '11 blog entry). Initially I was appalled at the stupidity of the instigators and the gullibility of the students. My second thought was to consider how the symbols and beliefs in our culture inspire us. Are we really that different? Do we not use our cultural equivalents to motivate each new generation of boys to fight our wars? Perhaps the only thing that separates our pursuit of Paradise from theirs is our insatiable need for immediate gratification.
